Powerful Families Financial Literacy Program Philosophy
The Phoenix Indian Center has proudly served Urban Native Americans since 1947. Throughout its sixty year history, the Center has continued its pledge to help Native Americans living in the Phoenix area achieve greater self-sufficiency. In keeping with this supportive stance, the Phoenix Indian Center offers its Powerful Families Financial Literacy program. Powerful Families is a financial literacy based program that provides opportunities for participants to become more self-sufficient and less dependent upon others for their financial well-being. The Powerful Families program addresses the needs of those individuals that are committed to self-exploration, making positive financial changes in their lives, and being more self-reliant.
Program Content
Like its sister program, Living Skills, the Powerful Families Financial Literacy program attends to the most common barriers to individual, couple, and family success. However, unlike Living Skills, Powerful Families participants focus primarily upon the most commonly reported cause of individual and familial stress, frustration, and difficulty: financial instability. During the course of the nine week program, participants meet one night per week, for two hours, and study, examine, and address the following topics:
1. You and Your Money
2.
ABCs: Accounts, Banks, and Credit Unions
3.
Ins and Outs of Credit
4. Improving Your Credit
5. Fundamentals of Budgets
6. Your Personal Budget and Savings Plan
7. Growing Your Money
8. Economic Justice: Identifying Scams and Protecting Your Assets
9. Turning Ideas into Actions
The Phoenix Indian Center, in partnership with Casey Family Programs, provides participants with a copy of the Powerful Families Financial Literacy work book, transportation assistance, and child care – all cost free to Powerful Families participants. Food and beverage is provided free of charge as well. Importantly, all participants receive a copy of their credit report, also free of charge. Needless-to-say, Powerful Family participants have consistency verbalized appreciation for the consideration the Center has given to making enrollment into this program as barrier-free as possible.
